The name of Ayia Napa comes from Saint Panaya (Mary mother of Christ). A small church in the centre of the village was named after Mother Mary.
Over the years Ayia Napa has developed into a popular holiday resort due to its beautiful crystal clear blue beaches with golden sands and many tourist attractions. Ayia Napa has become popular and is visited by many people from all over the world. It is also very well known for its magnificent night clubs and bars which cater people of any age. This town has much to offer whether you are young or old. When it comes to culture there are many places to visit which maintain the Cyprus tradition. Many cultural events take place throughout the year including the Festivals of Kataklismos in June and the Ayia Napa Festival in September both of which include outdoor music and dance performances. Special acts from all over the world are brought to perform and in recent years these have included River Dance, Nana Miskouri and many more.
Ayia Napa is renowned for its beatiful beaches said to be the best in the Mediterranean Sea. The turquoise clear waters and golden sands of its beaches attract visitors year after year.
